Sometimes we might need to view icons that are contained in a program or a dll file for a certain purpose. If the icons looks nice, then perhaps we want to extract them. IconViewer is a free utility designed to view and extract icons from files like executable files and dll.
How to view & extract icons from files with IconViewer
Install IconViewer. After the installation completes, right-click any executable file and select Properties. If the file contains icon, then you’ll be able to see a new tab is added, which is called “Icons”. Click the tab.

On the top window, you can see the list of all icons the file has. Now select any icon. Below, on the “device images”, you can find the available sizes of the icon you select. The Preview will change accordingly as you move from one size to another.
You can copy or save the icons using the tools located on the bottom. Unfortunately, the current version, which is 3.0, doesn’t allow you to save all sizes.
The option menu lists a few things you can do to configure how IconViewer should behave like changing the order of the images, enabling the ability to view icons for multiple files at once and grouping icons by file.

IconViewer allows you to save icons in .ico, .bmp, or .png format.
If you select multiple files at once, the icons of each will be grouped for easy viewing by default.
IconViewer is compatible with Windows NT, 2000, XP, Vista and Windows 7. I tested it on Windows 7 32-bit and it works well. You can download IconViewer from the developer’s homepage.
