Write protecting USB drive can prevent viruses and the likes infecting the drive, especially if you’re going to copy a few files from your USB drive to a computer that doesn’t have an adequate virus protection. Unfortunately, there are many USB flash drives around that doesn’t have a built-in write protection feature.
Portable USB Write Protector [ via ] is a free utility designed to handle such a situation. Select “USB write protection ON” to write protect your USB drive and select “USB write protection OFF” to disable it.
The weak point of using this freeware is that you have to put it first on the computer before you plug-in your USB drive. Hence, you can only effectively use this utility for the computer that you frequently use and have access to keep your data within. If you want to use it on another computer, I’m afraid that you have to download it first. Luckily, the size is only 187KB, so the download should be pretty fast.
